"How to Do Everything: Mac"

What Are All These Ports (and Other Items) For?
Macs all come with the same basic port configurations, but do sport a few differences. Ports are
the ???mysterious??? openings located on the side or back of your Mac.
8 How to Do Everything: Mac
Ports are used for connecting external devices to your computer, and as you can see by looking
at your Mac, their sizes and shapes vary greatly depending on what type of device you are
connecting. Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectors aren??™t the same size and shape as FireWire or
Ethernet connectors for the obvious reason of preventing you from mistakenly connecting a USB
cable into your Mac??™s FireWire or Ethernet ports. Thankfully, Apple has included ports for each
of these connection types, and a few more.
USB ports are generally used for connecting devices such as your keyboard and mouse, small
printers, digital cameras, scanners, and the like. USB is the most commonly used of the ports and
comes in two versions, or speeds: 1.1 and 2.0. Version 2.0 is much faster than version 1.1, and is
backward compatible, meaning a device that has only a 1.
