"How to Do Everything: Mac"

1 port can connect to another device via
a 2.0 port and work just fine.
FireWire is a blazingly fast connection type used primarily for connecting digital video cameras
and external hard drives. There are currently two speeds, or types, of FireWire: FireWire 400 and
FireWire 800. Both are more fully discussed in Chapter 19.
Ethernet is what you use to connect a Mac to your network, if you??™re not using a wireless
connection. It??™s also very fast and is how your Mac communicates with other devices on your
network, as well as the rest of the world via the Internet if you use a broadband Internet Service
Provider (much more on this topic in Chapter 5).
Other common ports are the headphone/audio out ports, which are what you use to connect
(you guessed it!) headphones and external speakers.
Now let??™s take a look at each of the consumer Macs to see where all these ports, and other
items, reside on your particular model.
iMac
The iMac has the most ports of the three consumer models. As shown in Figure 1-1, it has three
USB version 2.0 ports, two USB version 1.
