"How to Do Everything: Mac"

14 How to Do Everything: Mac
?–  Desktop The desktop is the first thing you see when you boot up and is where your
desktop (or background) picture resides. The desktop can also contain files and folders.
More details about the desktop are provided in Chapter 2.
?–  Dock The Dock is the area at the bottom of the screen that contains icons for frequently
used applications, folders, or ongoing processes. These icons are actually shortcuts to the
real items. See Chapters 2 and 3 for more information on the Dock.
?–  Window Windows are used when browsing your computer for files, applications,
or folders. They also contain their own sets of menus and shortcuts. Chapter 2 covers
windows in more depth. A window doesn??™t open by default when your Mac first comes
on; I opened the one in Figure 1-7 for illustration purposes.
I??™ll delve into much more detail regarding these items in subsequent chapters.
How Do I Drive This Thing?
The next step is to figure out how to actually maneuver in this strange new land. If your Mac is
an iMac, it came with an input device called a mouse (see Figure 1-8), which comes standard
with most desktop computers.
