People who haven??™t used a computer or don??™t
know very much about them are usually frightened of them. In Chapter 1 I used the illustration
of familiarizing yourself with the controls of a new car before you drive it. That same illustration
applies for this chapter, but I want to go back a little further, to when you first learned to drive.
Remember how excited and scared you were? You had some idea what the pedals and steering
wheel were for, but until you got your feet and hands on them and discovered the intricacies of their
operation, you were probably very timid. Those feelings are what most people have when they use
a computer for the first time.
This chapter will help you discover how to efficiently ???work the pedals??? of your Mac so that
the rest of your learning experience will be a much more comfortable one. Now, what if that car
you first learned to drive with wasn??™t your dad??™s pickup truck or mom??™s Oldsmobile, but a brand
new Porsche? That??™s what it feels like to use a new Mac for your first computing experience (but
you??™ll need a small electric fan to get that ???wind in your hair??? effect)!
A Very Brief Word about Keyboards
???What could be so complicated about a keyboard???? some more experienced readers might be
asking.
