"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Well, for a new computer user, plenty! Sure, the letters and numbers on some of the
keys are obvious, but today??™s keyboards have lots more than letters and numbers. Depending
on which Mac you have, Apple??™s keyboards have keys for ejecting CDs and DVDs, setting the
Mac??™s speaker volume, and even increasing and decreasing the monitor screen??™s brightness level.
Consult the documentation that came with your Mac to discover any special keys that may be
native to your particular model.
It??™s GUI, Not Sticky
It??™s time to get to know your surroundings a little better. Discovering what all those pictures and
folders on your computer??™s screen are is the next step in getting familiar with your Mac. Those things
are part of your Mac??™s GUI (pronounced goo-ee), which is an acronym for graphical user interface.
CHAPTER 2: Getting to Know Your Mac 23
What??™s a GUI?
A GUI is all of those pictures and symbols you see on your Mac??™s screen. Everything on that
screen is a component of the GUI. GUIs have been around for a very long time, and they are
the real reason that computers have become so integral to the daily lives of millions of people
over the past couple of decades.
