The Dock
The Dock (see Figure 2-4) is the bar you see at the bottom of your screen that contains icons for
shortcuts to applications, folders, and disks. You can customize the Dock to contain whatever
applications, files, and folders you use the most. The Dock is always present, but you hide it, resize
it, or move it to a different position on the screen. Using the Dock greatly decreases the time you
spend opening common applications and disks, and makes viewing ongoing processes, such as
viewing the progress of a print job, a snap. More information on the Dock is presented in Chapter 3.
Did you notice the icon of the really friendly-looking fellow on the left side of the
Dock? The picture used for this icon is known as Happy Mac. This icon represents the
Finder, and this is the only place you will find it on your Mac. Clicking this icon brings
the Finder to the forefront of everything else, which can be very handy if you??™ve got
multiple windows open at once and you need to get back to a starting point.
Files and Folders
Many people confuse the terms ???file??? and ???folder??? when it comes to computers in general.
