"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Learning how to navigate the files and folders that populate your Mac is
vital to using your computer with efficiency and confidence. However, you??™re about to discover
more than just getting around your file system. There are several Mac basics covered in this
chapter, but if you??™ve never used a Mac before, you??™re about to see that even the basics on a Mac
are cooler than most upscale features on other operating systems.
Discover the Finder
As mentioned in Chapter 1, the Finder is your best friend when it comes to using your Mac.
The Finder has been with the Mac since its inception in 1984, although it has weathered many
changes in that span of time. Let??™s jump in!
To get started, you need to know how to open and close Finder windows. Finder
windows are accurate of their namesake, as they allow you to find, or see, items on your
Mac??™s hard drive. As often is the case with any operating system or application, there is
more than one way to perform an action??”in our case, open a new Finder window. The
easiest way is to simply click the Finder icon in the Dock, and a new window will pop up
almost instantly (unless you already have a Finder window open, in which case that window
will be brought to the forefront).
