The options are pretty self-explanatory.
?– Advanced From here you can choose whether to show extensions assigned to your
filenames and whether you should be prompted with a warning each time you try to
change an extension or empty the Trash. Most files have an extension that tells the user
and the Mac what applications are associated with that file or what kind of file it is.
Those extensions are hidden on the Mac by default because you can usually tell what
applications go with a file by its icon, but you can choose to always show the extensions
anyway by checking the ???Show all file extensions??? check box. Since these extensions
can be changed, whether by accident or on purpose, you??™re given the ???Show warning
before changing an extension??? option. Checking this box simply enables a message
that warns you every time you try to empty the Trash. This is the Mac??™s way of making
absolutely sure that you wish to empty the Trash. Checking the Empty Trash Securely
box simply means that your trash is gone for good when you empty the Trash. You may
think that would be the case without having to check such a box, but it??™s not.
