I??™m sure you??™ve noticed the z character by now, either on your keyboard (the keys on
either side of the SPACEBAR) or next to selections within menus. This is called the Command
character and has been a part of Apple computers since the first Mac was released in 1984.
The z key is most useful for giving commands to your Mac via the keyboard, which often is
quicker than pointing and clicking with your mouse to choose a command from a menu.
In the instance of getting information for a file or folder, instead of using one of the
aforementioned techniques, click the item once to select it, then press and hold the z key
and the I key simultaneously. This technique is called a keyboard shortcut, and when spoken
or read is ???COMMAND-I??? or z-I.
The z key can be used in conjunction with lots of other keys to perform different tasks.
Click a menu in the menu bar and you will see that many of the selections in the list have
corresponding keyboard shortcuts to their right. Try to get in the habit of using these keyboard
shortcuts. Once you have a few of the more common shortcuts memorized, you will use your
Mac much more efficiently.
