When you
install an application as an administrator (one of the user accounts, discussed in
Chapter 4), you have the right to put an application anywhere you want. If you want
that application to be available to all users of your Mac, you would be wise to follow
conventional wisdom and use the Applications folder; otherwise, feel free to install it
anywhere that is convenient for you. The reason all users of the computer may not be
able to access the application when you install it anywhere other than the Applications
folder is that the users may not have permission to access that other folder. Chapter 4
also provides more information about permissions.
?– Library This folder holds tons of information that your Mac, and the applications you
have installed, uses, such as printer and scanner drivers, settings preferences, desktop
pictures (a.k.a. wallpaper, for all you former Microsoft Windows users), screensavers,
and so forth. All the items in the Library folder are for system-wide use, meaning that
any item in this folder is accessible to all user accounts for the Mac.
