"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Or if you want to get fancy with
your newly found keyboard shortcut skills, use z-SHIFT-N. Your new folder
appears and is called ???untitled folder.???
CHAPTER 3: Cruisin??™: Navigating Your Mac 43
Notice that the name of the folder is highlighted in light blue; your Mac is waiting for
you to give your new folder a name, so just type anything you like (typically something that??™s
descriptive of the folder??™s contents).
There are some characters that are off-limits for folder and file names. These characters
are colons (:) and periods at the beginning of the name (.). Some applications may also
not allow slashes (/) in their filenames.
Creating files is a little more involved. You can create files from all kinds of sources, but
for demonstration purposes we??™ll stick with something very simple. Not only are you creating
a file for the first time, but you are also making your first foray into opening and using an
application! Trust me, this won??™t hurt a bit. Open a new Finder window and double-click the
Applications folder. One of the most basic applications on your Mac is called TextEdit; find it
in the Applications folder and double-click its icon to open it.
