"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Otherwise, soon your Mac??™s desktop will resemble that
of my dad??™s, with so many file icons on the desktop that the desktop picture can barely be seen!
(Love you, Dad!) Your Mac comes with a hard drive, but the space on that hard drive is finite. So
how do you free up the space on your hard drive? By deleting all the old jokes your former army
pals or office mates sent you via email, trashing the old recipe file for the green bean casserole
you hate, and getting rid of the game demo you downloaded that expired six months ago.
There are two steps to actually deleting files from your Mac.
The first step is to move the file to the Trash, and the second step is
to empty said Trash.
The most common way of moving files into the Trash is to
simply drag-and-drop them onto the Trash icon on the far right
side of the Dock, as shown here. You can also right-click or CTRLclick
a file and choose ???Move to Trash??? from the menu. The Trash
icon changes from empty to holding what appears to be a piece of
crumpled paper, indicating there are now files in the Trash.
