You have only told your
computer to make the space that the file occupies on your hard drive available to be written
over with new data. The file itself is still there and can be accessed by a hacker with the right
tools. Someone who knows what they are doing can still retrieve sensitive files such as tax
returns or credit card numbers even after you??™ve deleted them. But never fear, the Mac is
here! The way to permanently delete these files from your hard drive is to use the ???Secure
Empty Trash??? command:
1. Move the fi les you wish to delete to the Trash like before.
2. Choose Finder | Secure Empty Trash. Your Mac will ask you if you??™re sure you want
to permanently remove the fi le from the system.
3. Click Cancel if you change your mind. There is no turning back once you click OK!
46 How to Do Everything: Mac
Let??™s say you have a file you are working on for a project, and you??™ve placed that file several
folders deep on your hard drive for organizational purposes. Instead of having to drill through the
multiple folders every time you want to access the file, create an alias for that file and place it on
your desktop.
