"How to Do Everything: Mac"

This means
that removing the application??™s icon from the Dock does not harm the
original application itself. To remove the icon, just click-and-drag it out
of the Dock, and you will see a neat little ???POOF!??? as it disappears.
The Icons Aren??™t Just There for Show
The application icons in the Dock can do more than just open their
respective applications.
You can tell whether an application is running or not by looking at its icon in the Dock. See
the glowing dot under the Finder icon in Figure 3-10? That dot indicates the Finder application is
up and running; each application that you have running displays a glowing dot beneath its icon in
the Dock, even if the application??™s windows are hidden from sight.

52 How to Do Everything: Mac
Some applications, such as iTunes and System Preferences, allow you to access some of their
functions from the Dock. Right-click or CTRL-click the application??™s icon and, if that application
supports this functionality, you see a menu with several more options outside of the standard group.
