"How to Do Everything: Mac"

???Back in the day,??? images or text that appeared continuously on a CRT
screen would ???burn in??? on the monitor, causing a negative of the image or text to show up on the
screen when it was turned off. Screen savers were created to prevent this ???burn in,??? but LCDs
don??™t experience this problem.
Screen savers may seem to be merely decorative in the 21st century, but that??™s not entirely
the case. Many people use their screen saver as a security feature, requiring a password to be
entered before turning the screen saver off. Screen savers can also be informative, by providing
news updates and reminding you of appointments. You can even set up your screen saver
preferences to show an impromptu slide presentation using your iPhoto library.
Open System Preferences and click the Desktop & Screen Saver icon to open its preference
pane. Click the Screen Saver tab and you will see a list of preinstalled screen savers on the left
side, as shown in Figure 4-2. Click any of these screen savers to see its preview display on the
right side, enabling you to see what the screen saver will look like before you commit to using it.
