"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Mac comes with a built-in speaker, or speakers, that is selected by default. If you attach a set of
external speakers to your Mac, you can select them from this list as your default output devices.
You can also change the output balance by using the Balance slider.
CHAPTER 4: Stylin??™ and Profilin??™! Customizing Your Mac 83
Use the Input tab to choose what device your Mac uses to receive input. Newer Macs have
a microphone built right in, and this is the default input device. To use a headset or an external

Personalize (and Protect) Your Mac Even
Further with User Accounts
There is no better way to personalize, and at the same time protect, your Mac than to set up a
separate user account for each individual who accesses it.
User accounts were never a big part of the ???Mac experience??? prior to Mac OS X, but with
its introduction, Mac users discovered the wonderful benefits of this methodology. While user
accounts were a part of Mac OS 9 (though I doubt most Mac users were aware of them), they
never received the attention or reached their potential like they have in Mac OS X, which is a
direct result of Mac OS X??™s UNIX underpinnings.
