86 How to Do Everything: Mac
Set Account Types, Usernames, and Passwords
On the Password tab of the Accounts preferences pane, click the + button in the lower-left corner to
add a new account. This opens a new dialog box (see Figure 4-6) in which you choose the account
type and enter the name of the new account, the short name for the account, and the account??™s
password. Mac OS X automatically assigns the short name, but you can change it if you prefer.
This doesn??™t happen often, but I must take issue with Apple on something here. The
Password Hint field allows you to enter a statement or question that may jog your
memory if you forget the password for your account. In spite of Apple??™s affinity for this
option (notice the words ???Recommended???), I have to warn you that using a password
hint not only helps you remember the password, but also helps someone else to figure it
out! Be wary of this recommendation.
If you would like to encrypt the contents of this account??™s home folder, check the box next
to ???Turn on FileVault protection??? (more on FileVault in Chapter 14).
