Today, emailing and surfing the Web are as commonplace as using the telephone or driving a car.
What once seemed like something out of a science fiction movie is now reality, and it??™s waiting
for you to join in.
This chapter serves as a springboard to get you up and running on the Internet as quickly
as possible and with minimal hassle. It covers the bare-bones basics of getting email, surfing
the World Wide Web, and chatting with a friend using instant messages. Chapters 16 and 17,
respectively, are dedicated to the intricacies of web browsing and using email.
Get Connected
Before you can merge onto the ???information superhighway,??? you need a way to access it. To
access the Internet, you need to sign up with an Internet service provider (ISP). There are more
ISPs to choose from than you can imagine, and you can quickly become overwhelmed with all
the options available. This section briefly covers the main connection types used for accessing
the Internet and answers some basic questions about their services. Hopefully this will give you a
leg up when it comes to choosing an ISP, if you haven??™t done so already.
