"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Dial-up or Broadband?
I??™m sure you??™ve probably seen advertisements on television by ISPs who tout the many features
you can use if you sign up with them. They boast about having technologies that separate
them from the rest of the pack, but in reality the most important feature you need to consider
is this: speed. It??™s all about the speed, bubba. Well, it??™s not all about the speed; price should be
considered, but that isn??™t as large a factor as it once was because competition has driven down
prices. Let??™s check out the pros and cons of the two primary methods of accessing the Internet:
dial-up and broadband.
Dial-up Modem Connections
In the ???pioneer days??? of the Internet, there was only one option for the average user when it came
to Internet access: dial-up. Unfortunately, to further carry the ???pioneer days??? analogy, using a
dial-up modem in the 21st century is akin to driving a covered wagon down the interstate.
CHAPTER 5: Getting Started on the Internet 97
Dial-up modems use your phone connection to access the Internet, but at very slow speeds.
