Another positive point to ponder is that when you travel, broadband may not be available,
but there??™s a phone line almost anywhere you go. Having dial-up as a fallback plan is a great
idea. If you will be using dial-up only in such instances, an ISP that offers free Internet access is
the way to go.
The Need for Speed!
Broadband is the general term for broadband Internet access, and is capable of handling much
more data at much faster speeds than dial-up. Broadband is also always on; there??™s no need
to connect and reconnect over and over again. Broadband access takes many forms, such as
My Mac Doesn??™t Have a Modem!
You may have discovered by now that your Mac, assuming it??™s fairly new (less than two
years old), doesn??™t have a built-in modem. Take this as an indicator of the direction in which
Internet access is going. However, if my less-than-compelling description of dial-up still
hasn??™t swayed you from your interest in it, or if you need a dial-up modem for sending and
receiving faxes with your Mac, have no fear, Apple is here!
Apple does offer an optional dial-up modem that you can purchase and attach to one of
your available USB ports.
