The download (loading items from the Internet to your
Mac) speeds for DSL are significantly faster than those for dial-up, but the upload (loading
items to a server on the Internet from your Mac) speeds are not very fast at all, although still
speedier than dial-up.
Cable uses the same wiring provided by your cable company, and is also always connected.
Cable is currently the fastest of the three connection types I??™ve discussed, but is usually a
little costlier, too. A major advantage of cable over DSL is that it is more widely available.
The distance of the home or office from the telephone company??™s main exchange limits the
availability of DSL in some areas. The general consensus is that cable tends to be a more reliable

connection than DSL as well. A possible downside to cable is that your speed could be hindered
if a large number of cable customers are using the same connections, such as in an apartment
complex or condominium.

True to form, Apple has provided a simple way for you to configure your network settings: let
the Mac do it for you with the Network Setup Assistant.
