modem or a cable modem), the Network Setup Assistant should be able to get you up and running.

Now that you??™re (hopefully) up and running on the Internet, it??™s time to play with your newfound
powers. Again, for now we??™re just going over the basics of email, web browsing, and chat (a.k.a.
instant messaging), and we??™ll delve more deeply into the subjects of web browsing and using
email in Chapters 16 and 17, respectively.
Understand Email Basics
Email is such a common part of our lives that it??™s now hard to imagine being without it. Did
you know that email has actually been around since 1965? It wasn??™t until the Internet became
available for the average computer user that email reached its true potential, though. To depict
email??™s influence on our daily comings and goings, let??™s do a little comparison.
