A web browser is an application that acts as your window into the Internet world. Mac OS X
already comes loaded with one of the best web browsers available: Safari.
Browsing Fundamentals
Browsing the Internet may sound really daunting, but it only gets as complicated as you let
it. By this I mean that every web browser out there has basic functions that are common to all
web browsers, and simply sticking to the bare basics will be fine for most Internet activities.
Browsing gets complicated only when you begin to use specialized functions of individual
browsers, which is beyond the scope of this discussion.
Get started on the Web by opening Safari, either by double-clicking the Safari icon in the
Applications folder or by clicking the Safari icon in the Dock. Let??™s get acquainted with Safari??™s
browser window, shown in Figure 5-2.
When you first open Safari, you are taken to your default home page, which is Apple??™s own
Internet start page. This is a good page from which to learn how to interact with web sites in
general.
CHAPTER 5: Getting Started on the Internet 109
There??™s lots to see when the start page first loads, but there??™s lots more to see further down
the page.
