112 How to Do Everything: Mac
You must have an instant messaging account to use iChat. Your first and best bet is to use a
.Mac account, but if you don??™t have one, you??™re still in good shape. iChat supports three of the
other most popular instant messaging applications: AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), Jabber (open
source), and Google Talk (uses your Gmail account). You can use your username and password
from these other services with iChat. If you don??™t have an existing account with AIM, Jabber, or
Google Talk, click the Get an iChat Account button and sign up for a 60-day trial of .Mac. This
will get you kick-started into instant messaging, and you can always use one of the other account
types later on if you prefer not to stick with .Mac. Click Done to add your account to iChat.
Once your account info is squared away, you??™re almost ready
to begin chatting. I say ???almost??? because it??™s hard to chat??¦with
no one! When you start up iChat, you see your buddy list and
everyone that you??™ve added to it, but since this is your first time
logging in, none of your buddies have been added yet.
