"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Knowing the version of the application can be very beneficial when troubleshooting
problems or when deciding on upgrade options at a future date. To see this information and more,
click the application??™s menu next to the Apple logo in the top left of the screen, and choose About
Application Name. The application??™s menu has the same name as the application; for instance, if
you are using TextEdit, the application??™s menu will be called TextEdit. This also helps you easily
see what application you are currently working in.
Set Your Application??™s Preferences
Every application is set by its developer to work a certain default way from the start, but developers
are usually nice enough to give you, the end user, the power to change some of these behaviors
and appearances. You can see what changes you can make by clicking the application??™s menu and
choosing Preferences. As an example, Figure 6-1 shows the TextEdit Preferences pane; here, you
can change the way TextEdit creates new documents, opens documents, or saves them by changing
its preferences.
The preferences pane is different for each application.
