I cover making changes to the preferences
of some of these applications in upcoming chapters; for those I don??™t cover, you need to consult the
application??™s documentation for help if you don??™t know what the various options are for.

CHAPTER 6: How to Use Your Mac??™s Applications 127
Create a New Document
Most applications such as word processors (Pages, TextEdit, Microsoft Word, OpenOffice.org
Writer), spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice.org Calc), page layout applications
(Quark QuarkXPress, Adobe InDesign), and others enable you to create new documents. Some
applications prompt you to open a new document when they first launch, but if not, follow these
easy instructions.
The typical method for opening a new document is to open the File menu and choose New
or New Document (z-N is the usual keyboard shortcut). Some applications may be slightly
different, so you need to consult the documentation that came with the application for specific
instructions.
Select, Cut, Copy, and Paste Items
Moving items such as text and pictures from one document to another is an extremely common
task.
