"How to Do Everything: Mac"

To open a file, just double-click it.
That??™s it! When you save a file, part of the information contained in that file is the name of the

application that created it. Double-clicking the file causes the Mac to match the file with its
parent application and open it up.
If you already have the application open in which you are going to open the file, instead of
browsing your Mac??™s hard drive for the file in question, you can open it directly from within the
application. Choose File | Open (or press z-O), browse your hard drive for the file you need, and
then double-click to open it.
Occasionally, you may have a file you created in one application, but need to open it within
a different application for whatever reason. For example, perhaps you don??™t have the particular
application that your colleague created a file in, but you still need to open that file and edit
its contents. Many applications use proprietary file types, meaning that files created in those
applications can be opened only by those applications, but some applications use file types that
are more universal in nature and can be used by several different applications.
