Inkjet printers are more prevalent in homes and small businesses due to their very low initial
cost point and wider availability. Inkjet printers are capable of producing beautiful, photo-quality
output because they use ink, which produces richer color than the solid toner used in laser
printers. However, the cost of ink is much higher than the cost of toner. While the initial purchase
cost of an inkjet printer is very low, the cost of replacing the ink cartridges can be quite high,
particularly if printing photographs is your forte. Potential problems with inkjet printers could
include clogged heads on the cartridges and the potential to easily damage output with moisture.
Laser printers are great for printing documentation, but typically cannot produce the glossy
color quality one might expect when printing photographs. Output from laser printers is of

archival quality, and is, therefore, much more durable than output from inkjet printers. If you
have an important contract for a client to sign, print it with a laser printer as opposed to an inkjet
printer, or you risk the contract being damaged or destroyed if someone sneezes on it or spills
coffee on it.
