If you plan to connect your printer to a network, you most likely need to purchase an Ethernet
(RJ-45) cable. Ethernet cables and their connectors look very much like oversized telephone
cables. Some network routers, such as an Apple Airport, have USB ports, but most do not. If you
have the option, always go with the Ethernet cable because it has better connection reliability.
Choose Print Media
You will certainly be up the creek without a paddle if you try to print without paper. Printers
support various types of paper and paper sizes. Be sure that the media you purchase is
compatible with your printer.
One major warning I would offer is to not run inkjet media in a laser printer unless the
media specifies that it is laser-safe. Inkjet media may have a coating on it that will come
off when subjected to the very high temperatures used in laser printers, which can ruin
the printer.
Install Printer Drivers
Every device you connect to your Mac needs a driver. A printer driver is software that lets your
Mac know how to talk to your printer, what kind of printer it is, and what features it supports.
