CHAPTER 8: Start the Presses! Printing and Faxing Your Documents 175
The Print & Fax preferences pane is printer central for your Mac, where all printer
installations and communications are handled. From here you can add new printers, delete
printers, check the status of print jobs, and change settings. Some printer drivers even allow you
to communicate with the printer to view the consumables??™ levels, change the printer??™s internal
settings, and order supplies.
Notice the + and ??“ buttons in the lower left of the Print & Fax preferences pane. Clicking +
opens the printer browser window, whose menu bar offers many different methods for installing
printers. The methods we are concerned with in this section are the two most relevant and oft used:
USB and network. To find out more about using the other installation methods, click the Help sign
(the circled question mark) in the bottom-right corner of the Print & Fax preferences pane.
