If you??™re installing with Bonjour or AppleTalk, click the
Default tab in the upper-left corner of the printer browser window, and the printer should simply
show up in the Printer Name column. The Kind column will display whether it is running Bonjour
or AppleTalk (you may even see it listed twice, as some printers may be using both protocols).
Why Use TCP/IP Instead
of Bonjour or AppleTalk?
This question is a fair one. Why use TCP/IP, going through the process of assigning addresses
to devices, instead of a protocol that requires no configuration?
Bonjour is great for small office networks, but wasn??™t designed for larger networks.
AppleTalk was designed for large networks, but some configuration is involved once a certain
number of devices are on the network. AppleTalk also still suffers from the stigma of being
known by IT administrators as a ???chatty??? protocol. The first implementations of AppleTalk
were constantly broadcasting large packets over the network, causing unnecessary slowness
and bottlenecks. While this problem was later resolved in AppleTalk II, the reputation stuck
and AppleTalk has been on the slow path to extinction ever since.
