CHAPTER 8: Start the Presses! Printing and Faxing Your Documents 191
What Is PDF?
Portable Document Format (PDF) is a standard for sharing documents with colleagues and over
the Internet. PDF is a cross-platform standard, meaning that anyone with a computer can read the
document as long as they have a PDF reader application installed. You can read PDF files (often
called PDFs) on your Mac using the Preview application.
PDF technology is a major part of Mac OS X. PDF isn??™t just for creating documents, but
the underlying technology can be used to render graphics for many different types of devices.
Much of what you see on your screen when you look at your Mac is PDF-based. Apple has taken
advantage of PDF??™s wide array of abilities to add wonderful functionality that isn??™t available on
any other operating system.
One example of this functionality is the ability to create a PDF file from any document
using any application on your Mac. There was a time when the only way to make a PDF was to
purchase very expensive software from Adobe, create a PostScript file of your document, and
then ???distill??? (convert) the PostScript file into a PDF using Adobe Distiller.
