"How to Do Everything: Mac"

The
reason these keyboard shortcuts are so similar is that the corresponding commands perform
a very similar function, which is to add tracks to your Library. However, there??™s one major
difference in the way they operate. Import automatically makes a copy of the track in your
Music folder??”period, end of story??”whereas copying the track is optional with the ???Add to
Library??? command. Mind you, the ???Add to Library??? function does add the track to your track
list, and by default it does make an actual duplicate of the track file in your Music folder, but
it doesn??™t have to be that way. To turn this option off, choose iTunes | Preferences | Advanced |
General, and uncheck the ???Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library??? box.
Why would you not want a copy of the track added to your Music folder? To save precious
disk space, of course! If you already have the file in a separate folder, or a separate partition for
that matter, making a copy of the file only takes up that much more room on your hard drive.
My suggestion? Make a copy of the file in the Music folder and delete the original.
