"How to Do Everything: Mac"

You must set a master password to use
FileVault, and if you lose or forget your account??™s login password and the master
password, you won??™t be able to retrieve your files.
Firewall
Firewalls block people from accessing your Mac via the Internet or a network. Mac OS X has
a firewall conveniently built into it, so buying third-party software to handle this for you is
unnecessary (see following illustration).
300 How to Do Everything: Mac
Spotlight
Chapter 3 afforded a look at the Spotlight search feature of Mac OS X. This preferences pane is
where you set the options for Spotlight. Its two tabs are Search Results and Privacy.
Search Results
Choose the categories in which Spotlight can search, and arrange the categories in the order in
which Spotlight should be searching them.
CHAPTER 14: Making Sense of the System Preferences 301
Privacy
Sometimes you may not want people to be able to find files in certain folders. To prevent
Spotlight from searching those locations, add them to the Privacy list in this preferences pane.
Hardware
The preferences in this category (see Figure 14-1) determine how your Mac??™s hardware interacts
with other aspects of your system.
