"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Click Options to choose which communications protocols you use to share your files and
folders. AFP is the Apple File Protocol, FTP stands for File Transmission Protocol, and SMB is
for Server Message Block, which is what allows you to share with Windows-based PCs. Check
the box next to each user account you want to enable these protocols for.
System
The preferences in this category (see Figure 14-1) apply to system-wide use of your Mac. This
category includes eight preferences panes, several of which are covered in other chapters and
thus are addressed only briefly here.
Accounts, Date & Time, and Parental Controls
Set up user accounts, configure your date and time preferences, and limit accessibility for some
users with these preferences panes. Chapter 4 covers the details of these three preferences panes,
so consult that chapter for more information.
Software Update
A great feature of Mac OS X is its ability to update itself when Apple releases software changes.
The Software Update preferences pane has two tabs, Scheduled Check and Installed Updates.
