"How to Do Everything: Mac"

When you turn on Speakable Items, you are given a list of tips for using this
feature. These are well worth reading!
Keep in mind that technologies such as Speakable Items are not perfect. In order for
your Mac to hear your commands properly, it??™s best that you be in an otherwise quiet
environment. The microphone is unable to filter the sound of your voice from other
sounds in the room or office, so your ten-year-old daughter??™s slumber party may not be
the best setting to use this feature. Your Mac may blow a gasket from trying to interpret
all the screams and giggles! A microphone headset may help the Mac understand your
commands.
The Speech Recognition tab of the Speech preferences pane has two subtabs:
?–  Settings This subtab enables you to change the listening device (if you want to use
something other than the built-in microphone). The Listening Key is a key you press to
activate your Mac??™s ???ears,??? telling it to pay attention and execute the commands you are
about to give it. You can set the Mac to listen only while the Listening Key is pressed,
or to listen continuously, with or without a keyword.
