"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Ask your network admin about the other
configuration options if you are unsure.
?–  DNS This tab shows Domain Name System servers for your network, if there are any.
This is a configuration best left in the hands of capable IT folks if it??™s not already set up
automatically.
CHAPTER 15: Making Your Mac Play Pretty with Other Computers 343
?–  WINS WINS stands for Windows Internet Name Service, and is something you need
not worry about at all if you don??™t have Windows-based PCs on your network. If you do
have PCs on your network and would like for them to communicate with your Mac, very
simply stated, this is where you can choose the name of your Mac and the Workgroup
that it is part of so that the PCs see it when they browse their network. If you??™re not
knowledgeable of such things, this one is basically screaming for the help of a network
admin (and you might be, too).
?–  AppleTalk AppleTalk is an older communications protocol developed by (guess who?)
Apple back in the 1980s to allow Macs and other devices running the protocol, such as
printers, to easily connect to one another with little or no configuration settings.
