Set Preferences for Mail
Choose Mail | Preferences to access Mail??™s nine preferences panes, described in turn in the
following sections. These preferences allow you to ???teach??? Mail how you want it to behave in
various circumstances. Let the training begin!
General
In the General preferences pane, choose your default e-mail program, how often to check for new
mail, which sound alerts you to the presence of new mails, how to handle iCal invitations, and
where to save downloaded attachments (files the sender of the email attached and sent along with
the text of their email). You can also choose which mailboxes to include when searching your
emails, and whether or not to synchronize email across various Macs using your .Mac account.

You can choose what email application to use as your Mac??™s default for receiving and
sending email by changing the ???Default email reader??? option. By default, it is set to
Mail, of course.
Accounts
The Accounts preferences pane enables you to create, edit, and remove email accounts, and control
how Mail works with each individual account.
