It allows the option of keeping all your old PC
software around, and that??™s a definite plus after having plunked down the coins for all of it over
the years. The chances are pretty good that you now have the fastest Windows machine in the
neighborhood or office! But don??™t be surprised if over a period of time you find yourself booting
less and less into your Windows partition.
Alternatives to Boot Camp
Boot Camp is Apple??™s answer to installing Windows on a Mac, but there is an alternative:
Parallels Desktop for Mac. This program helps you install Windows, DOS, and even Linux
operating systems on your Mac.
Parallels uses a technology called virtual machines to store your Windows (or other)
operating systems and applications. A virtual machine is, in basic layman terms, a ???fake
computer??? created by the Parallels software that an operating system could be installed
on and used just like an actual computer. The virtual machine uses your Mac??™s hardware,
including its memory, networking, USB and FireWire ports, CD/DVD drives, mouse, hard
disks, and almost any other device you connect to it.
