The first thing to ask yourself when a problem
happens is, ???Did anything change before this problem occurred???? Did you add anything to your
Mac, such as more memory or an external device such as a scanner or printer? Did you recently
install new software or a software update? Are all cables firmly connected? Was anyone else
using the computer before you, and if so, did they make any changes? Did one of your kids pour
chocolate milk into the slot-loading CD/DVD drive, or take a hammer to your keyboard? And the
most important question of all, is the power on?
If you answered yes to the question you asked yourself, start there. If you connected a
peripheral device, disconnect it. Installed new software? Uninstall it. Cables not connected?
Connect them! Certainly some problems are not this easy to resolve, but the vast majority are.
Enable the Root User
There is a hidden user account on your Mac called the root user. Root is the end-all be-all of
user accounts, the head honcho, the big cheese, the godfather of your Mac. The root user is
the real ruler of your Mac??™s kingdom.
