"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Admin or not, yours is but a puppet regime; not even
your admin account has the privileges enjoyed by root. That said, it must be understood
before you enable this account that if you choose to log in as that account, you can do
absolutely anything to your Mac, for good or for bad. Consider yourself warned.
Now that I??™ve properly frightened you, know that there are good reasons for enabling
this account. What if your account has a serious problem (say, you can??™t even log in), and
although there are numerous other accounts on the system you can log into, yours is the
only admin account? If you enabled the root account, you??™re good to go. Log in as root to
resolve the issue.
To enable the root account, open
the Directory Utility (Hard Drive |
Applications | Utilities | Directory
Utility) and click the lock icon in the
lower left to make changes.
Enter your admin account??™s
username and password when
prompted. Choose Edit | Enable
Root User. Enter a password for
the root user account, enter it again
to verify it, and then click OK. If
you ever need to change the root password, just choose Edit | Change Root Password.
