"How to Do Everything: Mac"

?–  Did you recently add an internal device? Adding memory or cards to your Mac??™s
motherboard can cause startup problems if not installed properly. Remove the auxiliary
part and try again. If the Mac boots normally, try once more to reinstall, being absolutely
certain of the proper installation procedures.
?–  Is your display having problems? Sometimes a display may not be working properly,
making you think the Mac isn??™t on when it actually is. Did your Mac make its signature
startup sound when you first turned it on? Do you hear any of its fans turning or are there
any lights visible on the Mac? If the Mac is on but you simply can??™t see anything on your
display, make sure the display is connected properly and that the brightness is turned all
the way up.
?–  Reset the SMC. The System Management Controller (SMC) is a chip in your Mac that
controls all its power functions. Resetting this chip may resolve any power problems,
including the inability to start. It may sound like you need to don a NASA spacesuit to
perform this task, or better yet call Scotty from Star Trek to see if he can lend a hand, but
there??™s no need for such with this simple routine.
