"How to Do Everything: Mac"

routines for resetting the SMC, depending on the model of Mac you have.

Won??™t Shut Down
You??™ve learned what to try when your Mac won??™t start up, but what about those rare times
when it won??™t shut down? There are two ways to exert your mastery of your Mac in this
regard:
?–  Force a restart Press CTRL-z at the same time as the power button.
?–  Force a shutdown Press and hold the power button down for ten seconds.
424 How to Do Everything: Mac
?–  iMac or Mac mini Power the computer completely down and disconnect all cables
from it, including the power cord, mouse, and keyboard. Wait a minimum of 15
seconds, plug the power cord back in, but do not push the power button. Connect the
mouse and keyboard and then push the power button on the computer.
?–  MacBook Turn off the MacBook, disconnect any cables, including the power
adapter, and remove the battery. Hold down the power button for a minimum of fi ve
seconds, and then release it. Reconnect the battery and power adapter, and then press
the power button normally.
