"How to Do Everything: Mac"

External Devices Don??™t Work Properly
One minute you are printing that letter to Grandma, and the next minute your Mac acts like it??™s
never seen the printer before. What gives? Suffice to say, ???stuff happens.??? Let??™s try to figure
out why.
?–  Again, check the obvious. Is the device turned on? Check all power cables, as well as the
on switch for your power strip (if using one).
?–  Check the cables used to connect the device to your Mac. Make sure that the USB, Ethernet,
or FireWire cable you are using to connect the device to your computer is firmly seated
in the ports at both ends (the device and the Mac), and is unhindered (crimped, broken,
cut, stepped on, and so forth). Be certain that the cable is not too long; no more than
16 feet is recommended for USB and shorter than 15 feet is recommended for FireWire.
Try a different cable if you have one, or try connecting your cable to a different port.
?–  Is there anything between the device and your Mac, such as a hub? If you are connecting
the problematic device to your Mac via a USB or FireWire hub (used to extend the
number of USB or FireWire ports available for your Mac), try removing the device from
the hub and connecting it directly to your Mac.
