"How to Do Everything: Mac"

The simple restart should be the first
shot fired in your troubleshooting arsenal.
Yes, this simple solution was covered earlier in this chapter in the ???Troubleshooting 101???
section, but this is a reminder of how basic and yet important a troubleshooting tool it is.
Check Whether Your Mac Is Running the Latest OS Version
Make sure your Mac is running the newest version of its operating system. Sometimes the very
problem you are experiencing may have been resolved already in an update from Apple. Run
Software Update by choosing Apple | Software Update to see if any updates are available; if so,
download and install them to see if that corrects any troubles for you.
Troubleshoot Startup Issues
If your Mac powers up but Mac OS X won??™t start properly, chances are high that you have a
software problem of some sort, even if only temporarily. Try these steps when experiencing a
problematic startup:
?–  Shut Down, then Restart Hold the power key down until the Mac shuts completely
down, wait a few seconds, then power it back up.
?–  Zap the PRAM Sounds frightening, but it??™s no big deal.
