This resolves the vast
majority of kernel panics.
?– Force Mac OS X to boot Restart the Mac and then immediately begin holding down
the X key. This should force your Mac to boot into Mac OS X. If the Mac boots correctly,

make sure your Mac OS X volume is set as the startup disk in System Preferences |
Startup Disk.
?– Boot with the OPTION key If starting up with the X key doesn??™t work, try starting up
holding down the OPTION key. You should see icons appear in the middle of the screen of
your Mac OS X startup disk. Click the disk icon and then click the forward arrow.
?– Zap the PRAM Zap the PRAM to see whether resetting it clears up the problem. As
covered earlier in the chapter, to zap the PRAM, restart the Mac and immediately press
and hold the z-OPTION-P-R keys. Keep holding these keys until you hear the Mac??™s startup
sound at least twice. After the second chime, you can let go of the keys to reboot normally.
If none of the preceding measures works to resolve the kernel panic, installation of the operating
system should be your next, and last, resort before looking into hardware possibilities.
