"How to Do Everything: Mac"

Repair Disk Permissions
Can??™t delete a file or folder from the trash? Are applications locking up unexpectedly or not
launching correctly, or at all? Does your Mac seem to be slowing??”down??”or??”getting??”
really??”sluggish? Your disk permissions may be having a bad day.
Every file and folder on your Mac has permissions associated with it. These permissions
determine who can read, write, and execute the file or folder. If these permissions become
corrupted for whatever reason, they need to be repaired.
To repair these permissions, use the Disk Utility program, which is located in Hard Drive/
Applications/Utilities. Open Disk Utility, click the icon of your hard drive in the disc pane, click
the First Aid tab, and then click the Repair Disk Permissions button. If Disk Utility finds any
corrupted permissions, it repairs them and resolves your problem.
In some instances, such as an unusable system, it may be necessary to boot your Mac
from your Mac OS X installation disc to run Disk Utility.
CHAPTER 20: What the Heck Just Happened ? 429
My Application Just Crashed!

productive.
