"How to Do Everything: Mac"

You can force it to check for updates at any time by clicking
the Check Now button. Tell Software Update how often it should check for updates
(I recommend Daily if you have a broadband Internet connection) and whether to
automatically download important updates that it finds.
?–  Installed Updates This is simply a list of updates that your Mac has downloaded and
installed via the Software Update utility.
CHAPTER 22: Keeping the Engine Tuned 457
Keep Your Third-Party Applications Updated
Third-party apps need love too! Very few Mac users (or any other computer user, for that matter)
stick to just the applications their computer originally came with, so chances are good that at
some point you will own a third-party program, if you don??™t already. Programs such as Adobe
Reader, Microsoft Office for Mac, and Quicken tend to find their way onto a lot of Macs.
From time to time, such third-party programs have updates available from their developers,
and those updates can be very important to how the programs perform. Updating third-party
applications is as necessary to the health of your Mac as is keeping current with its original
applications.
