You cannot make changes to your startup volume. Some functions, such as verifying the
disk, can be performed, but if any errors are found, you cannot repair them. To repair or
format your startup volume, you must reboot the Mac using the Mac OS X installation
disc and run Disk Utility from it.
First Aid
Disks sometimes need repairing, and the First Aid tab can quite adequately render the service
its name suggests. Click the disk you want to use in the sources list, and then click the First Aid
tab to see the available options. The repairs effected by First Aid are not physical, but rather are

logical, meaning that the actual physical disk itself is not mechanically repaired, but the data on
the disk is corrected.
The following are the options on the First Aid tab:
?– Show Details Check this box to see the progress of the requested task.
?– Verify Disk/Repair Disk Click Verify Disk (shown as Stop Verify in the preceding
illustration because it has been clicked) to have Disk Utility examine the file system
structure of your disk.
