If any problems are found, click the Repair Disk button to resolve
them. Clicking Repair Disk first instead of Verify Disk runs both a verification and a
repair session at once.
?– Verify Disk Permissions/Repair Disk Permissions Click Verify Disk Permissions
to make sure the access permissions for each file are valid. If errors are present, click
Repair Disk Permissions to fix them. Again, clicking Repair Disk Permissions first
instead of Verify Disk Permissions invokes both tasks.
Most hard drives incorporate Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology
(S.M.A.R.T.), which is hardware developed by IBM to allow drives to examine
themselves for any possible failures. Disk Utility is able to utilize S.M.A.R.T., displaying
the S.M.A.R.T. status of a drive in the disk information section at the bottom of the Disk
Utility window. If the S.M.A.R.T. status is verified, the drive is fine, but if it says ???About
to fail??? you need to back up your system pronto!
